Flooding in Haddenham

Published: 26 September 2024

Following the recent extreme weather, the Parish Council has been asked by the flood management team at Buckinghamshire Council for information on the number of properties in the village affected by flooding.

So that we can provide an accurate picture of the impact on the village, we’d be grateful if any affected residents could please email clerk@haddenham-bucks-pc.gov.uk with the location and any photos you may have of flooding.

The Parish Council will be reviewing how best we can support the village during adverse weather. In the meantime, we’ve put together some resources which we hope will be of help to residents now and in the event of any future flooding.

Flooding causing a danger to life

Support
The Environment Agency’s Floodline: 0345 988 1188 provides support and advice regarding flooding. Their website also contains helpful information on what to do before or during a flood, and after flooding.

Responsibility for Watercourses On or Near Your Property
If you own or lease a property with a watercourse (stream, river, ditch, or culvert) running through or adjacent to your land, you have legal responsibilities as a "riparian owner." These responsibilities help to manage flood risks and maintain water flow.

As a riparian owner, you are required to:
  • Maintain the flow of water by keeping the watercourse free of debris, vegetation, and blockages.
  • Repair and maintain the banks and bed of the watercourse to prevent erosion and flooding.
  • Allow the free flow of water under any bridges or culverts on your property.
  • Avoid actions that could increase flood risk to other properties, such as obstructing the natural flow of the watercourse.
See the Environment Agency's detailed guide for more information.
