Diary - Summer 2009
This season has heralded the arrival of younger visitors of the village to Snakemoor, as learners, and helpers. The Baptist Church ‘s Crafty kids group visited in June and all seventeen children and eight helpers looked at the leaf shapes that belonged to trees and learned how to encourage insects to nature reserves through woodpiles. They didn’t leave before making their own contribution to Snakemoor’s upkeep, by clearing and stacking newly trimmed branches.
In July, more workers visited the reserve in the form of the Haddenham Guides. They cleared the pond of logs and rubbish, cut the grass surrounding it and some from around the fruit trees. Their hard work was wound up with a fish and chip supper!

In July too, the Reserve has also enjoyed the Brownies and the company of a snake! The snake of bicycles riders, learning cycle safety arrived at Snakemoor for a picnic lunch before making some new woodpiles and then snaking off again!
Finally, Snakemoor has at last got a butterfly and moth monitor. Twelve year old Olly Bevens has taken on the role of record keeper for this important duty.
August
Whilst summer holidays have been enjoyed, the hay at Snakemoor has been baled and with the help of Tom Bucknell some delivered to Snakemoor supporters. For those bales that remained, another use was found creating smiles and laughter (see photo)! If anyone would like hay next year (collected by recipient) then please contact Robyn Thorogood.
Discussions have also been held with Landmatch, who own the airfield site, finding draining solutions that might improve the Snakemoor pond.
As old growth is collected and delivered, so a focus on the new has begun. On a September afternoon in the sunshine , a small group of workers planted 300 fritillaries in the meadow and 500 bluebells in the trees. Such hard work was generously rewarded by some thirst quenching beer donated by the Haddenham Youth Football Club. Thank you to the six volunteers for their time and energy.
