Diary - Autumn 2009
Autumn has arrived , the last of the hay has been cleared and the pond banks and reserve entrance cut back. Pathways are trimmed and the cowslip and orchard areas tended to.
But not everyone has been treating the reserve with such kindness. With sadness we report that a considerable amount of rubbish was dumped at the entrance, and that somebody lighting a fire has led to the burning of a mature apple tree, supporting stakes and the ruin of a log pile left to rot and attract insects. It is also hoped that a new entrance sign will encourage users of the reserve and their dogs to be mindful not to leave anything at the reserve that shouldn’t be there!
A working party of thirteen adults and three children went to task at the end of October. Ash trees were removed to let in light for lower growth shrubs, and sycamores near the entrance were coppiced so to give light to the Rowan trees.
Undergrowth was also cleared from some shrubs and hedges that were planted last year. Rewards of drinks, cakes and soup were well received by the labourers!
On a sadder note, a third lot of rubbish had to be removed and Snakemoor now has a warning notice from the Police Community Support Officer.
